Spring 2021 One Room Challenge - Edwardian Modern Bedroom Week 1

It’s time for the One Room Challenge. I participated in this once before and it was so much fun so I’m giving it another whirl. What is it you may ask? It’s a bi-annual event showcasing interior designers and guest participants. Each Wednesday and Thursday, the internet and social media are flooded with interior design inspiration, original ideas, encouragement, and motivation as designers create a room in just 8 weeks!

Honestly, doing this this time scares me to pieces because lead times for furniture are taking so long these days. So, I’ll be biting my nails week after week as I wait for shipments to arrive. Sound fun? lol

Since we have to paint the walls of this rental a lighter color prior to moving out, we thought we might as well enjoy a new look for a while beforehand. I don’t have an awful before pic to show you of this bedroom, so I’m going to dive right into my design plan!

The Plan

You’ve heard of Victorian-Modern, but have you heard of Edwardian-Modern? I’m laughing here because these periods are side by side, so very similar. Things were still very ornate in the Edwardian era but had calmed down just a bit from the Victorian. You weren’t seeing the clean lines of the midcentury yet, but you were seeing less clutter, less pattern, with a shift toward lighter colors. With the invention of electricity, elaborate wallpaper was not a necessity to cover soot stains from coal. Kind of amazing to see the shift of interiors alongside the technology boom during this time! And the “Modern” in my design comes into play naturally, because we aren’t actually living in 1910 here, haha! I’ll use some new items just to turn everything on it’s head and keep it from feeling too stuffy.

With this project, I really want to keep the color pallet close together, but boring it will not be! This is not going to be your typical beige, cookie cutter, “playing it safe” room. I am taking beige and slapping it with pink. Or rather, taking pink and slapping it with beige. You be the judge. Isn’t this color so pretty? Funny, it’s very similar to the color I chose for this bedroom which everyone in the family enjoys, including my husband. It’s a calming color that still packs a little punch.

A dash of modern, a touch of farmhouse and a handful of Edwardian antiques comprise what I am calling Edwardian-Modern-Farmhouse. Now doesn’t that sound like an interesting juxtaposition?

I’m taking my inspiration for the early era from the Edwardian Farm docu-series and Mary Poppins! They depict two very different ways of living during the same era.

I can’t wait to cozy up in this room…

On my list of plans involves converting a secretary desk to a vanity for my make-up. I also plan to make a custom wall treatment over the bed. What I have in mind, I’ve never seen done before, so not entirely sure it’s possible. Now is where the nail-biting really kicks into high-gear! Will it work or be a total fail? There’s only one way to find out…

To-do

  1. Paint

  2. Finalize ceiling light: I am deciding between two on opposite ends of modern/traditional so they could really change the entire look of the room. This is a big decision. Follow along in my instagram stories to weigh in!

  3. Order pillows from Motif Pillows

  4. Design roman shades and have them custom-made. This might take awhile so I need to hop to it.

  5. Source a stool for the secretary desk I’m converting to a vanity. Something modern to balance it.

  6. Order sconce from Modern Lantern

  7. Make shades for sconces on either side of bed.

  8. Convert a bar-stool into a bedside table

  9. Purchase accessories. I’ll be modernizing the look of some vintage pieces.

  10. DIY wall treatment above bed

  11. Order fabric for upholstery

  12. Order bed
