I entirely reject the notion a ceiling fan something that should always be avoided. Some time in the 2000’s this became a trend among designers - to pull them out of rooms and replace with a light fixture. And while I agree, some can be quite out dated, they have come a long way. To be fair, we just didn’t have the options then that we have today, so I am sure if felt very good to toss out that dusty, cane-inset fan with boob-light attachment your parents had (you know the one). Fast forward to today, and I actually think some ceiling fans are kind of…cool? Literally. But also, they can feel almost like sculptural works of art, either receding into the background, or taking center stage in a room. And I’m not talking about those fandalabras either (not that I have any beef with them). I want a cool blast to the face when I turn one on, otherwise what’s the point?

So here is a round up for you to get inspired to bring the fan back in. Okay, maybe not the same fan (I draw the line at faux wood grain), but an updated one.

Modern Ceiling Fans in Real Rooms

More blades + more cooling power. For a large room, look for a wider diameter, like this 9-blade ceiling fan in this transitional, neutral living room.

If you ceilings are low, a semi-flush or flush mount ceiling fan is the way to go. This simple, 3-blade fan will be plenty to cool off this smaller living room area.

A sun room is a great place to install a ceiling fan as these rooms can get very warm in the Summer due to all the windows. You’ll be glad to have some air moving around.

In an oversized room, like this sunroom by Jean Stoffer, two ceiling fans provide enough air circulation to keep things cool.

Occasionally I will have a client from my online design service request a fan for their bedroom design. I am always happy to oblige. I can’t think of a better use for a fan. Why shouldn’t you prioritize comfort in a room you sleep in, ya know?
