ONE ROOM CHALLENGE SPRING 2022 HAUSMATTER INTERIORS OFFICE/PLAY ROOM WEEK 4

Welcome to week 4 of the One Room Challenge!

In case you missed it, here’s:

Week 1 (before and moodboards)

Week 2 (picture moulding)

Week 3 (paint color)

One room Challenge Spring 2022

This week, I painted the Ikea Kallax cubbies to match the wall color and oh boy, it’s really shaping up in here! I love how much it feels like a custom built-in, and less like a piece of cheap furniture. HA!

And I know these will be moved from room to room, house to house and can be repainted to suit whatever I dream up down the road. So I’d say with a little effort, this is the opposite of disposable furniture 🙌

Paired with the picture moulding we installed ourselves, you would never guess this was a room on a budget, right??!

In case you missed the tutorial, here is how to refinish your kallax shelving unit:

Since I had already done the work of prepping the surface previously, all I needed to do to change the color this time was to go over it thoroughly with a tack cloth to remove dust and debris.

I also painted the window muntins. Now, if you know me, you know I do not like using tape when I paint. AT. ALL. So, I found an easy way to bypass that altogether when painting these grid windows. I’ve painted them several times in this house and it is such an easy thing to do, now that I know this trick:

If you recall from week 1, I considered painting the trim on the window a slightly deeper shade of blue. I ultimately decided with this room, to keep it all the same. Less is more with this trim and I’ll look for other ways to bring in other shades of blue.

Notice how much bluer the paint color looks this week? I told you it can look like a mint aqua or a robins egg blue depending on the lighting! Kind of fun to experience that variation in color, don’t ya think? This room is like a mood ring I don’t want to take off.

Left to do

  1. Paint walls and trim

  2. Install ceiling wallpaper

  5. Finalize space plan

  6. Finalize art selection

  7. Source rug and accessories

  8. Organize cubbies for toys

  9. Organize closet for design samples

  10. Install light fixture

  11. Source accessories

  12. Paint shelves

  13. Install roman shades
